Emily is relatively unremarkable in appearance, sporting below shoulder-length black hair, ice blue eyes, slender athletic build and nearly always wearing a skull hair clip. She wears the cap under her yellow top hat in the show's opening dance number. In "A Picture's Worth a Thousand Bucks", Emily wears a pink victorian dress and a pink hair bow. In "Don't Make Me Over", Emily has curly black hair and wears blue eyeshadow and biker clothing. In "Barely Legal", she says she has to buy a new dress to go to the prom with Chici and because all her dresses makes her look die young, implying that she is actually young, not just because of the dresses.

Emily is a self-conscious teenage girl. Her insecurities cause her desperately to try to be part of the cool crowd, but this only results in her getting coldly rebuffed by Lola MiAmor , a popular, attractive, and egotistical cheerleader. However, another student named Neil Marwitz is attracted to her.
